Establish PM SHRI schools as lighthouse institutions, serving as mentoring hubs for surrounding government schools across Sikkim, promoting knowledge-sharing, peer learning, and systemic improvement across the State’s education ecosystem.
The journey of PM SHRI Schools in Sikkim began with the introduction of the national PM SHRI scheme under NEP 2020, aimed at transforming selected government schools across India into model centres of excellence. Sikkim adopted the initiative with a focus on strengthening public education in alignment with the State’s Himalayan ecology, cultural diversity, and commitment to sustainable development.
Sikkim was formally inducted into the scheme through a phase-wise selection process, ensuring that schools from across districts were included based on eligibility, evaluation, and readiness. In the first phase, 30 schools across various locations were selected, marking the State’s initial milestone in establishing a model school network. This was followed by the second phase, which added 13 more schools, expanding coverage across additional clusters and educational zones. In the seventh phase, 4 additional institutions were selected, bringing the total number of PM SHRI Schools in Sikkim to 47, representing primary, elementary, secondary, and senior secondary levels.
Each selected school has since undergone systematic interventions to enhance infrastructure, pedagogy, digital access, environmental practices, and teacher capacity - ensuring measurable progress towards becoming exemplary schools.
Over time, PM SHRI Schools have evolved not only as improved institutions but as lighthouse schools, guiding neighbouring government schools through mentorship, best-practice sharing, and collaborative innovation.
Today, PM SHRI stands as a key driver of educational transformation in Sikkim, reflecting the State’s vision of empowering students through quality education rooted in sustainability, culture, and future-ready skills.
